Our perspective on The Essentials
Why we crreated The Essentials
Every year, we welcome visitors from around the world who want to discover Burgundy and its wines. Many arrive with the same questions.
What makes Burgundy so special? Why are some vineyards considered among the finest in the world? What is the difference between a Village wine, a Premier Cru and a Grand Cru?
For newcomers, Burgundy can sometimes feel surprisingly complex. Dozens of appellations, numerous villages, different classifications and a vocabulary that is not always easy to understand can make the region seem intimidating at first.
We created The Essentials to provide a clear and enjoyable introduction to Burgundy wines, helping visitors build a solid foundation before exploring the region further.
Why this class exists
Over the years, we noticed that many visitors wanted something different from a highly technical wine class.
They were looking for a course that would help them understand the fundamentals of Burgundy without feeling overwhelmed by information or specialist terminology.
The Essentials was designed for exactly that purpose.
Our goal is not to turn participants into wine experts in two hours, but to give them the knowledge and confidence needed to better understand the wines they will encounter during their stay in Burgundy.
Whether at a winery, a restaurant, or a wine shop, the concepts discussed during this class provide valuable reference points for understanding the region's unique wine culture.
• would like to understand Burgundy's appellations and vineyards
• enjoy wine but have never taken a formal tasting class
• are planning winery visits during your stay
• want a friendly and accessible introduction to the region.
• are looking for an in-depth tasting methodology course
• are seeking a more advanced educational experience.
They gain a better understanding of:
• Burgundy's main grape varieties
• the concept of terroir
• the hierarchy of appellations
• the differences between Regional, Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines
• the fundamentals of wine tasting
• how to read and understand a Burgundy wine label.
Most importantly, they feel more confident navigating wine lists, tasting rooms and wine shops throughout Burgundy.
For this reason, we have chosen wines representing several of Burgundy's major wine regions, including Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais.
Tasting wines from different areas allows participants to appreciate both the diversity and the coherence of Burgundy as a wine region.
Rather than focusing on a single village or style, The Essentials offers a broader overview of what makes Burgundy unique.
For many participants, it becomes the starting point for future discoveries, winery visits and more advanced tasting experiences.
Our objective is simple: to help visitors leave Burgundy with a deeper understanding of the region and greater confidence in their ability to appreciate its wines.
